This year I recived the award at the National Convention for JCI Canada as the Local President of the Year. I was nominated by my peers, who wrote to the National Organization and was judged by a pannel of JCI Senetors from around Canada.
This is the letter that was submitted to JCI National for my consideration:
JCI Canada Local President of the Year 2023 Submission
JCI Kootenay President Shonna Murphy
How does this member exemplify the JCI Values in JCI activities?
Shonna is a living embodiment of the phrase "service to humanity is the best work of life." Whether in her personal or professional life, Shonna is deeply committed to providing leadership development opportunities for youth throughout the Kootenays. As President of JCI Kootenay, she was not only a leader but a coach for her entire executive team. Coaching comes to Shonna as naturally as breathing.
A standout example of her leadership was the creation of JCI Kootenay’s mentorship program. Shonna spent significant time mentoring and empowering new member Shandell Woods, who grew immensely under Shonna’s guidance. Initially a quiet, reserved member, Shandell blossomed into an active committee member, playing a pivotal role in events like the JCI Kootenay Bike Swap, the Santa Claus Parade, and even contributing to the National Convention JCI Kootenay hosted.
The highlight of their mentorship was during the first-ever JCI Kootenay Bike Swap in 2022, a unique event that resembled a live version of Facebook Marketplace. After the event, Shonna and Shandell worked together to contact all the remaining sellers. While Shandell was nervous, Shonna calmed her and guided her through the entire process, modeling patience and teamwork. This moment of mentorship perfectly illustrates Shonna’s belief that bringing others along is more valuable than simply completing tasks herself.
How did this member’s contributions benefit his or her Local Organization?
Under Shonna's leadership in 2022, JCI Kootenay achieved remarkable milestones. The National Convention was hosted in September, marking a monumental achievement for the organization. Shonna also led the Second Annual Summer Camp, planned and facilitated at Blue Lake Camp, and helped the chapter achieve Chapter Excellence for the 14th consecutive year.
Her leadership directly contributed to growing the chapter, welcoming 9 new members and creating an environment that empowered her team to dream big and accomplish significant goals. Shonna was instrumental in planning and hosting the largest social event of the year, the Annual Summer Camp, outside of her responsibilities as Chapter President.
She attended almost all executive and social meetings, embodying the spirit of JCI through her consistent participation and leadership. Her commitment to the organization and to fostering a sense of community and camaraderie was evident throughout the year.
What work has this person done in the community?
Beyond JCI, Shonna has been an integral part of the Kootenay community. As the Program Director for Columbia Outdoor School, Shonna oversees the stewardship of Joseph Creek, a small creek in Cranbrook that the school has cared for over the years. Thanks to her efforts, there has been a significant increase in vegetation and a reduction in environmental contamination.
Shonna also works with the Ktunaxa Guardians in Training Program, an Indigenous employment and leadership skills mentorship program. Through this program, Shonna dedicated her time to teaching life skills and preparing students for their futures. She spent one afternoon each week for an entire school year with the 10-20 students, making a lasting impact on their lives.
Key Point
Shonna was elected Chapter President in a competitive three-way election, where she won handily. If the vote were held again, she would have likely received even more support. She was a phenomenal president who empowered her team from the Executive Retreat all the way to her President’s Dinner at the end of her term. Shonna truly lived up to the challenge of leading for one year, taking full advantage of the opportunity and making a tremendous impact on JCI Kootenay.
As someone who followed in her footsteps, I can attest that Shonna left very big shoes to fill.
